The World Bank is in talks with the Azerbaijani Education Ministry with a view to identify measures to reform and improve the education system, the WB Baku Office reported.

A WB mission headed by social sector coordinator in the South Caucasus Mesker Mulato will visit the country from Jan.31 to Feb. 5.

"The mission is tasked to conduct discussions to identify areas of cooperation and opportunities for implementation of projects in this field in the future," the office reported.

Late last year, WB has approved a new program of strategic cooperation with Azerbaijan. It is designed for 2011-2014 and will be a key instrument for aid to Azerbaijan.

The new strategy is based on priorities such as strengthening non-oil sectors, including infrastructure development and agriculture. In addition, the bank's activities will also focus on strengthening the effectiveness of social services, including health, education, social protection and water supply.

Since Azerbaijan's accession in 1992, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and in 1995, the International Development Association, the World Bank has invested about $ 3 billion in 43 projects. Commitment from IFC following the accession of Azerbaijan in 1995 totals almost $ 350 million for 45 projects.

The Bank currently finances 20 projects worth about $2 billion. They cover the areas of transport, water and sanitation sector, agriculture and irrigation, health and education.
