Azerbaijani State Land and Cartography Committee developes plan to prevent flooding

The Azerbaijani State Land and Cartography Committee developed a plan to improve the condition of land flooded last spring, the head of the State Committee Garib Mammadov said.

"In 2010, the state committee conducted operations on inventory and cartography of 128,154 hectares of land in the flooded area of Sabirabad region, 18,692 hectares of land - in Saatli and 15,698 hectares - Imishli region of Azerbaijan", he said

He said that the plan of actions was submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Last year, the State Committee also presented a draft work to create additional sleeve of Araz River to prevent regular flooding as a result of the river flood.

There were floods in Azerbaijan which occurred due to prolonged heavy rainfall in the basins of the Kura, Araz and Ganikh rivers in May 2010.

Floods were registered in 40 regions of Azerbaijan. As a result of the disaster about 20,000 homes were flooded, more than 300 - destroyed, 76,000 hectares of cultivated land were under water.
