The total length of roads in Azerbaijan is 18,946 kilometers, Azerbaijani Transport Ministry's chief consultant Azer Aliyev said.

Aliyev said some 1,915 km of the total figure is highways of international significance, 2,716 km - national importance. The remaining 14,315 kilometers are local roads.

"The country built and rehabilitated more than 5,000 kilometers of roads over the past seven years. Construction and full reconstruction of roads as part of the corridors TRACECA and North-South will be carried out by late 2012," Aliyev said.

Construction and reconstruction are carried out through the state budget and loans from international financial institutions.
The total amount of credits received for the development of the transport sector is $2.8 billion, of which $1.9 billion falls to international financial institutions, the remaining $878 million - a the Azerbaijani government.

"Azerbaijan has already constructed and reconstructed approximately 806 kilometers of roads, including roads of international importance. Some 460 kilometers of the figure were constructed and reconstructed through loans from international financial institutions, 345 kilometers - Azerbaijan's own funds. Construction and reconstruction work is underway on 870 kilometers of roads, on 749 kilometers of which work is realized at the expense of international institutions "- Aliyev said.
