Roughly 69 settlements in Kazakhstan's Kyzylorda and South Kazakhstan regions, where more than 400,000 people live, will be protected from flooding thanks to the Koksarai counter-regulator commissioned in 2011 over the Syr Darya River, the Kazakh PM's website reported on Thursday.
In addition, Koksarai counter-regulator will help to save the water to fill the Aral Sea and watering of rural lands.
Koksarai counter-regulator over the Syr Darya River in the South Kazakhstan region is capable of accumulating up to 3.0 cu. km. Water in the volume of 2,300 cubic meter per second can pass through the main hydro unit, its length is 44.7 km. Supply canal with the length of 16 km has capacity of 500.0 cubic meters per second, offtake canal - 10.2 km with a capacity of 500.0 cubic meters per second.
