Kazakhstan’s gross external debt ups in 2011

Kazakhstan's gross external debt increased by $5.6 billion to $123.8 billion in 2011, Kazinform reported referring to the Kazakh National Bank.

About 4.1 percent of this sum fell to public sector (liabilities of the Government and the National Bank), 48.4 percent - on inter-company debts and 11.8 percent - on banking sector.

According to the bank, the relative parameters of Kazakhstan's external continue improving due to the early growth of goods and services export and GDP. In particular, the ratio of gross external debt to goods and services export hit 133.2 percent at the end of 2011. This index amounted to 179.6 percent as of late 2010 and 234.3 percent as of late 2009.

The ratio of gross external debt to GDP hit 66.6 percent as of late 2011 compared to 79.9 percent as of late 2010 and 98.3 percent as of late 2009.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan's net external debt decreased by $11.9 billion to $13.6 billion as of December 31, 2011. The public sector hardened the net creditor position in the reporting period. The public sector's assets exceeded liabilities by $59.1 billion at the end of 2011.
