Azerbaijan informs Russia about car import controls

Azerbaijan, Baku, April 12 / Trend A. Akhundov /

Imports of vehicles without antilock brake system and airbags will be banned in Azerbaijan from May 1. The Azerbaijani State Customs Committee has been charged with the execution of this decision, committee chairman Aydin Aliyev told media today.

"The Russians will be informed at government level about the ban to strengthen controls at the customs checkpoints," Aliyev said. "The decision will come into force from May 1." The main purpose is to ensure safety of drivers and passengers and will apply to all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles.

According to AZS 635-2012 state standards 'Procedure for certification of wheeled vehicles and their parts', insists that cars imported or produced in Azerbaijan must have antilock brake system and at least one airbag.

Permission on production and import of cars that do not meet these requirements will not be given. This decision applies to passenger cars weighing less than 2.5 tons. The decision does not apply to VAZ-2121 Niva and UAZ cars.
