Payment card market in Azerbaijan increases by over seven per cent

As of April 1, 2012 there were 4.66 million payment cards in Azerbaijan which indicates an increase in their number in circulation in March by 0.71 per cent and compared with the same period in 2011 - by 7.32 per cent, the statistical report of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) said on Wednesday.

Total turnover for payment cards through ATMs and POS terminals in March amounted to 784 million manat, and the total number of operations was 5.274 million units. The number of debit card transactions amounted to 4.96 million units worth 703 million manat.

Of the total number of debit card transactions, 4.523 million operations worth 663 million manat were carried out through ATMs, and through POS-terminals 271,000 transactions worth 22 million manat.

Some 314,000 transactions worth 81 million manat were carried out on credit card in March 2012.

Of the total number of credit card transactions, 100,000 operations worth 30 million manat were carried out through ATMs, and through POS-terminals 57,000 transactions worth 19 million manat.

As of April 1, 2012, there were 2,168 ATMs in the country. As many 1198 ATMs alone are located in Baku with 970 in other cities and regions of the country. Their total number increased for the year by 239 units, or 12.39 per cent.

As of April 1, 2012 the number of POS-terminals totalled 20,994 units, of which 19,772 are located in Baku and 1,222 units in other cities and regions. Their number from March 2011 increased by 12,137 units, or by 2.37 times.

The official exchange rate is 0.7858 AZN to $1 on May 30.
