Date of preparation of strategy for solid waste management in Azerbaijan determined

The draft strategy for managing solid waste in the Apsheron region, designed for 20 years, will finally be ready in early 2013 and handed over to the government of Azerbaijan for consideration, the head of project management and public relations department of Temiz Sheher, Ogtay Mammadov, told Trend on Thursday.

"By the end of this year an interim report will be presented under the project of a single solid waste management plan implemented by the Ministry of Economic Development of Azerbaijan together with the World Bank and after its study and discussion, the final decision will be made," Mammadov said.

Solid waste management project consists of five components: institutional reforms, including strategy; the Balakhani landfill rehabilitation project, the closure of unauthorised dumps; purchase of equipment and the development of investment projects including trans-shipment points.

The project will cost $41.5 million, of which $ 29.5 million fall to the WB loan and $12 million to the government of Azerbaijan.

The Turkish firm Ekodenge provided its consulting services in preparing a strategy for managing municipal solid waste.

Temiz Sheher started its activities in March 2009.
