Georgia, Tbilisi, June 19 / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /

MP from Tsageri (the administrative center of the Lechkhumi region) Karlo Kopaliani requires reducing scale of construction of series of Namahvan hydroelectric power station in Lechkhumi.

He said at a plenary session on Tuesday that this construction poses a threat to the Rioni gorge. According to the deputy, this gorge faces the same threat as in the 60s as a result of the construction of Ladzhanur HPS. In particular, he said, the population can not handle consequences of the climate change to this day.

"During this construction three conditions should be taken into account: the impact on the environment, economic benefits and the attitude of the local population. I visited all the 14 villages, which fall into the zone of flooding. I know well attitude of the population. People are worried. Most of the locals are dissatisfied with scale of construction. Surface of the water is 7.5 square kilometers. In fact, the godge will be destroyed. We believe that the construction of hydropower stations in such form in the Rioni gorge is unacceptable," Kopaliani said and urged the authorities to reduce scale.

Power of Namahvan HPS will be 450 megawatts.
