Although Iranians make up one percent of the world's population, they account for two percent of its energy consumption, Saeed Mohazzab Torabi, the managing director of Iran's Energy Efficiency Organization (IEEO) said, IRNA reported.
Torabi made the comment at a ceremony for signing a cooperation agreement with the Basij Engineers organization.
He added that Iran would be saving as much as $15 billion (USD) annually through optimizing its energy use.
Industry claims 22 percent of the energy produced in Iran, commercial buildings and households use 36 percent of the country's energy and transportation 27 percent.
Iran's industrial sector could conserve between 15 to 30 percent of the energy it uses, households and commercial buildings could save between 10 to 30 percent and transportation could conserve 25 percent of the energy it uses.
The IEEO chief pointed to Iran's Targeted Subsidy Reform Plan as an effective tool in creating awareness and behavior changes among Iranians. In the first year the program was implemented citizens saved two billion kilowatt hours of electricity even though one million customers had been added.
Started in December 2011, the subsidy program pays out $37 (USD), to Iranians while eliminating subsidies for energy carriers and some commodities.
The cooperation agreement signed by the IEEO and Basij Engineers provides for working together on applied research projects to optimize and reduce energy consumption, holding workshops and developing new domestic technologies for conservation.
