By its next annual celebration of the Islamic Revolution, Iran will present eight new radiopharmaceuticals it is producing domestically.

Dr. Amir Reza Jalilian, the executive in charge of the National Master Plan to Produce Radiopharmaceuticals, said discussion about domestically manufacturing the medications began in 2008, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reports.

After the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran consulted with five of the country's important nuclear medicine centers, it was decided to focus on 20 drugs. Ultimately 15 drugs made it through the various testing phases to production, said Dr. Jalilian.

Seven medications were readied for use in 2010 and 2011. The production and quality control of the eight remaining drugs is finished and they will be unveiled by Iran's "Decade of Fajr" in
February which celebrates the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

Radiopharmaceuticals are used in nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat diseases and for imaging.
