The Iraqi Kurdish autonomy significantly increased gold imports in January-July, head of the body to monitor the quality of gold and jewels Bakr Aziz said, the Iraqi newspaper Al-Mada reported.
He noted that the Kurdish autonomy imported 34 tons of gold during the first seven months of this year, while the figure was 17 tons last year.
Aziz said the increase in purchases of gold are associated with a significant increase in demand for the precious metal in the domestic market of the autonomy.
Gold imports into the country are mainly from Turkey and Arab countries in the Persian Gulf.
