A new passenger train Almaty - Altynkol № 393/394 owned by Turan Express company began operating in test mode on Saturday, Kazakhstan Railways said today.

This marks the beginning of the passenger traffic on the new railway line Zhetygen - Korgas built in record time.

The construction of a new 293 kilometer line began in 2009. This envisages opening of the second railway border crossing point on the border with China.

Although the main function of the new line is increase cargo turnover with China, launching passenger rail traffic plays an important role for the development of the region.

A new route will operate on a regular basis from September 3.


A new route runs through the southern part of the Almaty region. The train will make two stops at Shelek and Taskarasu stations in a test mode.

The representatives of Almaty City Administration, Kazakh Railway national company and Turan Express will attend the launch ceremony.
