The Iranian city of Abadan, in the south-western province of Khuzestan, will soon be connected to the country's national railway network, the governor general of Khuzestan Province stated.

The project will be financed through selling shares of the Khuzestan Steel Company, Jafar Hejazi said.

Some 1.3 trillion rials ($106 million) worth of shares is envisaged to be sold, he noted.

Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructure's managing director Ahmad Sadeqi said on September 3 that some 35 trillion rials (around $2.9 billion) will be sold in bonds by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2013) to expand transport infrastructure nationwide.

He added that last year five trillion rials were issued in bonds.

He also said that 10,000 kilometres of railroad will be built by the end of the year.

Some 25,000 kilometres of railway is in operation across the country, Sadeqi said. He added that by the next two years all the country's provinces will be connected together through the railroad network.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Railways managing director Abdolali Saheb-Mohammadi has said that the national railroad network of Iran is now linked with Syrian and Turkish networks and is also connected with Turkmenistan via Sarakhs.
