Iranian carpet exports hit $180m

Iran exported some $180 million worth of handmade carpets in the first half of the current Iranian Calendar year which began on March 20.

The amount shows a 21 per cent decrease compared to the same period the previous year, the ISNA NEWS Agency reported.

Iran is currently exporting carpets to 80 countries of the world despite all the sanctions targeting the country's economic sector.

The industry, mine and trade minister Mehdi Ghazanfari said in September that Germany, USA, Italy, UAE, Japan and Switzerland are the main targets for Iranian carpets.

According to the head of the National Carpet Centre, Mohammad-Baqer Aqa-Alikhani, the export of carpets falls in the first half of each year, but grows in the second half.

Iran has developed plans to export as much as $1 billion worth of carpets in the current calendar year, he added.

According to the Customs Administration data, carpet exports last year rose by 0.8 per cent in value, but decreased by 15.4 per cent in weight, compared to the previous year.

Iran exported over $560 million worth of handmade carpets in the last calendar year, accounting for some 24 per cent of the world's total carpet trade.
