Agricultural production grows by almost 6 percent in Azerbaijan

As of Nov. 1, 2012, Azerbaijan agricultural production grew by 5.9 percent in comparison with the same period last year, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee report said. The volume of crop production increased by 6.5 percent, livestock - by 5.1 percent in comparison with the same period last year.

As of early November, the volume of collected grains, except maize, exceeded 2.619 million tons from the 994.7 hectare-crop area. The yield per hectare hit 26.3 centners.

Maize production reached 1.811.000 tons from 353.000 hectares. Taking into account the maize, grain and legume collection increased by 1.7 centners per 1 hectare and reached 2.8 million tons. Annual demand for food grains is about 1.6 million tons.

The farms also collected 968.300 tons of potatoes (3.3 percent more than last year), 1.190.400 tons of vegetables (0.5 percent more), 424.700 tons of melons (10.5 percent less).

The average yield of potatoes per hectare increased by 3 centners, vegetables - by 6 centners and hit 147 and 153 centners. The average yield of water melons and melons dropped by one centner and hit 143 quintals.

As of November 1, cotton collection totaled 48.900 tons. This index increased by 16.8 percent compared to last year. Along with the cotton-growing, tobacco yield also increased. Thus, the increase in tobacco area by 6.5 percent boosted increasing the crops by 19.7 percent to 42.000 tons compared to the previous year.

Sugar beets were planted in an area of 36.000 hectares in 2012. As of early November, 313 centners were collected from with each hectare and production of these products amounted to 984.000 tons.
