In his letter to Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Bangladeshi President Muhammad Zillur Rahman expressed confidence in expanding relations between the two countries.

"I firmly believe that friendship and relations between the two brotherly countries will intensify and expand," the message said.

It was previously reported that Bangladesh is examining the possibility of joining the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, promoted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Pakistani media reported, citing sources in the Bangladeshi government.

PakTribune's article said that in response, the Turkmen side proposed that Bangladesh hold preliminary talks on the matter with Kabul, Islamabad and New Delhi.

"India could benefit if Bangladesh joined the project as Dhaka would have to pay a fee for Delhi's transit," a government official said.

In May of 2012, Turkmenistan signed a memorandum of understanding with transiting Afghanistan regarding TAPI. Contracts for the sale of Turkmen gas were also signed with the State Gas Systems of Pakistan and Indian GAIL ltd.

The resource base, namely the Southern Yoloten- Osman (Galkynysh) field, in addition to the Dovletabad field is the largest field in Turkmenistan. Russia began to show interest in this project at a high level. Its implementation is supported by the U.S.

Daily deliveries can amount up to 90 million cubic meters of natural gas. Turkmen gas will help meet growing energy consumption in India and Pakistan, where by 2030 demand could double, while the remainder will facilitate the ongoing shortage of energy in transiting Afghanistan.

The project cost was estimated in 2008 at $7.6 billion. Recently Bangladesh has expressed its interest in the project.
