Iran's hydroelectric power plants have generated 9.922 billion megawatt hours of electricity since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2012), ISNA quoted Farbod Estiri, an official with Iranian Energy Ministry as saying.

The figure shows a 3 percent rise compared to the same period of the previous year.

"The hydroelectric power plants have the capacity to generate 9,496 megawatts of electricity," Estiri noted.

In December 2012, Iranian Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Behzad, citing the latest statistics released by the International Energy Agency, said Iran holds 14th place in the world as an electricity producer.

"Iran has gone up by two spots, since 2010, when it stood at 16th place among other countries," Behzad said, adding that in the Middle East, Iran ranks first as an electricity producer.

At present, Iran's power generation capacity stands at 67 gigawatts, and is projected to hit 70 GW by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2013).

Sixteen new power stations with a total capacity of 2.6 GW, have come on stream in the current Iranian calendar year.
