Azerbaijan and Iran have agreed to intensify meetings in the customs area, chairman of the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee Aydin Aliyev said today at an event dedicated to the professional holiday of customs officers.

Last week, deputy heads of Azerbaijani and Iranian Customs Committees met at the Azerbaijani Astara border checkpoint.

"Most drugs are transported to Azerbaijan through the southern border," he said. "Moreover, while revealing drugs in other parts of the country, it is found that they were transported from Iran. This was one of the main issues we discussed. The issues of checkpoint activity in a more simplified form, reducing the number of queues and time spent on inspection, combating smuggling and so on were also discussed."

He said the heads of the customs services will meet at least once every six months, with the heads of local customs bodies at least once a month.

Ways to solve existing problems at border checkpoints designed to simplify customs procedures for passengers' arrival and departure and to increase trade turnover were discussed at the meeting.
