As of April 1, 2013, the total assets of Azerbaijani banks amounted to 18.494 billion manat, increasing by 25.93 percent compared to the same period in 2012, the Azerbaijani Central Bank's statistics report said today.
The basis of the assets of the banking sector (61.1 percent) fall to the loans delivered to customers to the amount of 11.304 billion manat (increased by 23.97 percent), investments (1.564.7 billion manat, increasing by 21.89 percent) and funds on correspondent accounts (1.371.3 billion manat decreasing by 16.4 percent). Loans and deposits delivered to the financial sector amounted to 753.2 million manat (with a growth of 30.26 percent).
The deposits (8.242.6 billion manat) have the main part in the structure of liabilities (44.57 percent), increasing by 17.2 percent compared to the first quarter of 2012. Loans and deposits obtained from the financial sector amounted to 5.316.6 billion manat, increasing by 16.7 percent.
During the first quarter of 2013, the total liabilities of the Azerbaijani banking sector increased by 26.4 percent and hit 15.826.71 billion manat. For comparison, the figure amounted to 12.522 billion manat for the same period in 2012.
The Azerbaijani banks' capital continued to grow in the first quarter of 2013, although there are still banks in the banking sector that do not meet the minimum regulatory capital requirements (10 million manat). During the period, the capitalization of the Azerbaijani banking sector increased by 23.3 percent and hit 2.667.7 billion manat in Azerbaijan as of April 1 compared to the first quarter of 2012.
According to the CBA, the number of banks with the capital exceeding 10 million manat reached 41 in the first quarter of 2013, while the number was 42 in the first quarter of last year. The share of these banks in the total capital of all banks in the country was 99.7 percent as of the end of the reporting period.
There were no banks with the capital ranging from 5 million manat to 10 million manat for the period. But there was one bank on the banking market in the first quarter of last year. Consequently, the bank moved into the category of banks with a capital from 3.5 million manat to 5 million manat. They hit two units in the first quarter of 2013. The share of these banks in the total capital of all banks in the country by the end of the reporting period amounted to 0.3 percent.
Around 43 banks operate in Azerbaijan.
