Iran buys 1.137 tons of wheat from farmers

Iran has bought 8.18 trillion rials (about $667.2 million based on the official rate of USD and some 227 million dollars based on the free market price) worth of wheat from domestic buyers since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21) until June 6, the Fars News Agency quoted an official with te Agricultural Jihad Ministry, Mohsen Darayi.

Farmers sold 1.137 million tons of wheat to the government during the mentioned period, up 15 percent year on year, he said.

It's predicted that the amoun would raise to 7 to 9 million tons by the end of the current calendar year (to end March 20), Darayi added.

The government has raised the guaranteed price of buying wheat this year by 70 percent, so that it buys each kilogram of wheat at 7200 rials from framers.

The trade Promotion Organization of Iran has disallowed exports of wheat in a bid to curb illegal selling of wheat at western borders.

According to Reuters report published on June 6, Iran bought 600,000 tons of wheat from EU countries during the last two weeks.

Before Iranian Customs Administration reported that the country imported 500,000 tons of wheat during first two months of the current solar year (started on March 20), worth $239 million.

According to official statistics, Iran imported 5.1 million tons of wheat during 2012. Iran's humanitary consumption of wheat is 14 million to 14.5 million tons per year.
