Iranian official: Qatar seeks to import water from Iran

Qatar is seeking to import water from Iran, the Mehr News Agency quoted Yahya Al-e Es'haq, the chairman of Tehran chamber of commerce, as saying.

It [Qatar] has offered plans regarding transfer of water from Iran, he added.

Tehran chamber of commerce pursues the policy of enhancing relations with the Persian Gulf states seriously, he said, adding that a number of delegations have been dispatched to the UAE, Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar in this regard.

Qatari businessmen are interested in investing in different projects in Iran, he noted. There is hope that the two countries would establish a joint council of business, he said.

In January, Khabar Online reported that Iran has been negotiating with other countries to import water into its provinces, having a shortage of it.

Among those provinces are: North Khorasan, South Khorasan, Khorasan Razavi, Yazd, Kerman, Semnan, Tehran and Qom.

Member of Iranian parliament's Agriculture committee, Ali Iranpour said that Iran is considering to import water from Tajikistan, considered as a good source of water for the Islamic Republic.

In May 2012, Iranian ex-Energy Minister Majid Namjou said that Iran plans to import around one billion cubic meters of water from Tajikistan.

Iran experiences daily increase of water consumption among population, and the lack of water is felt more and more with each year.

Iran has recently experienced several droughts, especially in the south where it gets hit by violent sand storms that engulfed several cities.
