About 10 percent of Iran's 25 to 65 years old population suffers from diabetes, secretary of the International Congress on Endocrinology & Metabolism Updates, Sasan Sharghi said, ISNA reported.

He also went on to note that, about half of Iran's population is prone to diabetes.

Sharghi underlined that each year, some 300,000 people acquire the disease in Iran, with about 100,000 of those people live in capital city of Tehran.

Earlier in May, ILNA news agency quoted, chairman of the Iranian Diabetes Society Asadullah Rezheb as saying 30 percent of Iranian people living in big cities suffer from diabetes, or will suffer from the disease in the future.

Rezheb said seven million people are currently suffering from diabetes, and most of them are unaware of their disease.

According to him, the study conducted found that over 14 percent of Iran's population over age 20 suffers from diabetes. Rezheb noted that this is a figure for people suffering from the latent form of the disease, and the disease will manifest itself in the future.
