The process of aligning the motor roads in the Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRASECA) and North-South transportation corridors zone with the requirements of the first technical category of main highways will be completed in 2014-2017, Azerbaijan's draft state budget for 2014, submitted for the parliament's consideration said.

In particular the draft budget said that, two additional lanes will be constructed in 2014-2017 at the Kurdamir-Ujar-Yevlakh and Ganja-Georgian border sections of the Baku-Gazakh-Georgian border main highway (located on the TRASECA route) in order to align the roads with the standards of the first technical road category.

TRACECA is the international programme of cooperation in the sphere of transport between the EU and partner-countries in Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. The organisation has a permanent secretariat in Baku.

TRACECA member states are Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Moldova, Romania, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Iran.

According to the draft budget, during this period works will be conducted on aligning the Gandob-Russian border section of Baku-Guba-Russian border main highway and the Shorsulu-Masalli and Alat-Masalli sections of the Baku-Alat-Astara -Iranian border main highway (located on North-South corridor's route) with the first technical category.

The North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC) is a multimodal route for transportation of passengers and cargos having a total length of 7,200 kilometres from St. Petersburg (Russia) to the port of Mumbai (Bombay, India).

It was designed to attract transit freight traffic from India, Iran and other countries of the Persian Gulf to the territory of Russia (via the Caspian Sea), and further to the Northern and Western Europe.

According to the draft budget for 2014, favourable conditions will be created for growth of capacity of the ground road infrastructure as a result of obtaining four-lane road transit traffic on Azerbaijan's territory.

According to the draft budget it is expected that the transit of goods and passengers will increase.

It is also expected that revenues from transport sector of Azerbaijan will grow, the draft budget said.
