Iran is continuing to export natural gas to Turkey while the country is currently facing a severe gas supply deficit to household and industry sectors, the Mehr News Agency reported on January 7.

Despite a serious shortage of gas to a number of provinces, Iran currently exports 20-22 million cubic meters to Turkey.

Gas supply to industries in Iran has been limited, while domestic gas consumption has reached a critical level due to the severe cold season.

The country's domestic and commercial total gas consumption units surpassed 482 million cubic meters per day on Dec. 30 which was a new record during the current solar year (started on March 21).

Statistics show that gas consumption by the household sector has been 450-480 mcm per day in recent days.

Supplying gas to power plants has been limited and the country's main industries including steel, cement and petrochemical industries have faced a shortage.

Under an agreement between Tehran and Ankara, the Islamic Republic should export up to 30 million cubic meters of gas daily to its north-western neighbour.

In 1996, Iran and Turkey signed a 25 year agreement to supply 10 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey annually.

Iran plans to increase its gas transfer capacity to Turkey and European countries up to 50 million cubic meters per day.
