Over 5.1 mln tons of goods transited via Iran’s ports in 9 months

More than 5.109 million tons of goods were transited via Iran's ports during the first nine months of the current Iranian calendar year, which began on March 21, ISNA quoted Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization official Sadollah Abdollahi as saying on Jan. 22.

The figure rose 23 percent compared with the same period last year, he added.

Imam Khomeini port accounted for 3.344 million tons of the transited goods, he noted.

In December 2013, the director of the roads maintenance organization said that over 8.9 million tons of goods were transited via Iran during the first eight months of the current Iranian calendar year, which began on March 21, an 11 percent rise year on year.

Davoud Keshavarzian told IRIB that some 96 percent of the goods were transited by roads.

The transited consignments mostly consisted of fuel, construction materials, cotton, home appliances, vehicles, foodstuff and fertilizers, he noted.

Statistics show that over 11.6 million tons of goods were transited through Iran in the past Iranian calendar year.

More than 100 countries transited their goods via Iran. Iraq, China, the UAE, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan transited the highest amounts of goods.
