By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

More than 1.6 million Iranians aged 15-29, most of them university graduates, are unemployed.

Iran's total employed population is 21.3 million, while 2.5 million people are jobless, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on April 21.

With 5.8 percent unemployment rate, Iran's northern Golestan province has the lowest jobless rate, while southwest Lorestan province, has the highest with 17.1 percent unemployment rate.

The service sector has the highest number of employed people with over 10.1 million employees.

In 2013, Iranian Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Ali Tayyebnia said that the country will need to create around 8.5 million new jobs in the next couple of years, otherwise the unemployment rate in Iran would increase.

He explained that a big number of student graduates exit universities and look for jobs. Previously, Tayyebnia said that low economic growth rate is currently the main challenge to the national economy.

Tayyebnia said the ministry will focus on improving the living standards through curbing inflation and encouraging businesses.

The number of jobless in Iran has increased by 270,000 over the past eight years (March 2005-March 2013).

In August 2013, Iranian Deputy Labor Minister Mohammad-Hossein Forouzan-Mehr said plans were underway to reduce the unemployment rate in Iran to seven percent by 2015.
