The issues of energy cooperation and the issues related to the protection of the Caspian ecology were discussed during the visit of the Deputy Director General of the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission Fabrizio Barbaso to Ashgabat, according to the Turkmen government report.

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the report said.

The report said that during the meeting held in a businesslike atmosphere, the parties discussed the possibility of expanding cooperation in the energy sector, as well as issues related to the protection of the Caspian Sea ecology.

Turkmenistan, which holds the fourth-largest gas reserves, is exploring the possibility of its delivery to the European market. The project on the laying of Trans-Caspian pipeline to the coast of Azerbaijan, where Turkmen raw materials can be delivered to Turkey and further - to Europe is underway in this regard.

The negotiations on the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline among the EU, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan began in September 2011. At the initial stage, the matter is the conduction of the ecological expertise with the participation of the independent international experts.

Earlier it was reported that Russia and Iran, speaking against the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline, raise the issue of ecological safety procedures of its laying.

"Southern Gas Corridor", including the Trans-Caspian project remains a priority for Brussels.

Trans-Caspian gas pipeline could be a part of several major projects, including AGRI and TANAP, active participants of which are Azerbaijan and Turkey.
