Azerbaijan’s transport sector increases cargo and passenger transportation

Around 165 million metric tons of cargo were transported by Azerbaijan's transport sector in January-September 2014, which is 2.1 percent more than in the same period of 2014, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee's report as of January-September says.

The volume of non-oil cargo transportation increased 3.3 percent in January-September and hit 117.5 million metric tons, according to the committee.

Around 76.5 percent of the total volume of cargo transported in January-September accounted for the private sector.

Some 57.9 percent of the total volume of cargo was transported by vehicles, 28 percent - pipelines, 9.7 percent - trains and 4.4 percent - ships.

Azerbaijan's transport sector transported about 218 million metric tons of cargo in 2013, which is 3.4 percent more than in 2012.

Around 1.3 billion people were transported by passenger vehicles in January-September, which is 5 percent more than in the same period of 2013. Most passengers were transported by vehicles (88 percent) and metro (11.7 percent).

Some 16 million metric tons of cargo were transported by railway in January - September compared to 17 million metric tons in the same period of 2013.

Some 7.3 million metric tons of cargo were transported by ships in January-September compared to 8.8 million metric tons in the same period of 2013. The entire volume of transported cargo fell to international operations. The volume of cargo handled at Azerbaijani ports in January-September amounted to 8.9 million metric tons.

Some 95.3 million metric tons of cargo were transported by vehicles, which is 2.7 percent more than in January-September 2013.

The volume of passenger transportation stood at 1.2 billion people (5.1 percent growth). Some 96.3 percent of passengers were transported by buses and 3.7 percent - by cars.

Some 156.5 million people were transported by the subway, which is 4.1 percent more compared to January-September 2013.

Some 1.4 million passengers were transported by planes, which is 8.7 percent more than in the same period of 2013. Around 0.3 percent of transportation by this type of transport fell to the private sector.
