Kazakhstan plans to upgrade 6,000 kilometers of railways by 2020, the First Deputy Minister for Investment and Development Zhenis Kasymbek said.

"Kazakhstan plans to upgrade 6,000 kilometers of railway tracks by 2020," he said at a briefing in the Central Communication Service Oct. 29.

He said that the task has been partially fulfilled.

The Zhezkazgan-Beyneu and Arkalyk-Shubarkol railway lines with a total length of 1,250 kilometers were temporarily commissioned in August 2014.

He said that the work of these routes will allow creating 3,800 new jobs.

Another important task, included in the state program, is the issue of reducing the deterioration of rail transport assets.

"This deterioration appeared in 1990s," he said. "We plan to reduce the deterioration rate to 40 percent by 2020. The recently created branch of vehicle engineering will facilitate this."
