By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Turkey will increase the production of domestic mobile phones, Turkish Minister of Transport, Shipping and Communications Elvan Lutfi was quoted Jan. 26 by Anadolu agency as saying.

He said that Turkey produced 1.071 million mobile phones in 2014 and 347,649 in 2013.

The minister said that domestic mobile phone production affected the imports of similar products from other countries to Turkey.

"Around 1.088 million mobile phones were imported to Turkey in 2013 and 612,913 in 2014," Elvan said.

He said that Turkey is expected to annually produce three million domestic mobile phones in 2015.

It was earlier reported that Turkey launched the first domestic smartphone Turkcell T40 in December 2013.

The domestic smartphones were put on sale in Turkey in early 2014.

The head of Turkey's Information Technologies and Communications Authority (BTK) Tayfun Acarer said earlier that Turkey is interested in a joint mobile phone production with Japan.

He said that Turkey has created the climate for attracting foreign investments and given the large demand for mobile phones in the country, the Japanese firms should take advantage of it.

"Smartphones account for 60 percent of the mobile phones imported to the country," Acarer said.
