Astana International Airport increased passenger traffic by 13 percent in 2014, the press-service of the airport reported on Jan. 27.

The passenger traffic of the airport reached 2,960,181 people in the reporting period.

The number of handled flights increased by 11 percent to 22,550 flights in the reporting period.

Delays of flights decreased by 2 percent, while the number of regular flights increased by 10 percent.

The airport also increased handling of cargo and mail by 16 percent to 9,653 metric tons in the reporting period.

The passenger traffic on domestic routes amounted to 1,568,896 people in 2014 (38 percent increase compared to 2013). The passenger traffic on international routes hit 1,391,285 (a 42-percent increase compared to 2013).

The passenger traffic increased due to increasing of the frequency of the existing flights and opening of new routes.

In 2014, regular flight from Astana airport to Russian city of Tomsk was launched for the first time. Moreover tourist charter flights to Bourgas (Bulgaria) and Thessaloniki (Greece) were operating.

The frequency of flights on domestic routes to Almaty, Shymkent and Atyrau have also been increased. The highest growth in passenger traffic was on such regular international flights, as Astana- Abu Dhabi, Astana-Istanbul, Astana- Urumqi.

"The quality and safety of the provided airport services meet the international standards of ICAO," the press-service of the airport said.
