The Baku International Sea Trade Port transshipped 5.89 million metric tons of various types of cargo in 2014

The Baku International Sea Trade Port transshipped 5.89 million metric tons of various types of cargo in 2014, which is 16 percent less than in the same period of 2013, a source in the port told Trend Feb. 5.

Some 3.65 million metric tons of goods of the total volume of transshipped port in 2014 accounted for ferry cargo, which is 13 percent less compared to the same period in 2013, according to the source.

In 2014 dry cargo terminal of the port transshipped 1.14 million metric tons of cargo, which is 11 percent less than in the same period of 2013.

The port processed 2,170 TEU (Container ship capacity is measured in twenty-foot equivalent units) containers in 2014, which is 7 percent less than in the same period of 2013.

Founded in 1902, the Baku International Sea Trade Port supports maritime trade with the Caspian littoral states. It also has access via the Volga-Don and Volga-Baltic canals to world markets.

The port serves as a link in the transport chain, linking the ports of Georgia on the Black Sea and Central Asian countries. It is a major transportation hub in the Europe-Caucasus-Asia corridor.

The port can process up to 10 million metric tons of liquid cargo and up to 9-10 million metric tons of general cargo annually.
