Iranian Central Bank says not to delete nuclear sign permanently from notes

Baku, Azerbaijan, Mar. 6

By Khalid Kazimov - Trend:

The Iranian Central Bank announced that it does not intend to permanently delete the nuclear program sign from its 5,000-rial notes.

The announcement came after voices were raised by right-wing activists asking why the country's nuclear sign which used to be included at the back of the notes was replaced with the image of the University of Tehran's entrance façade in a new print of the denomination.

In the announcement, the Central Bank said that the new sign is printed only to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the opening of the University of Tehran, maintaining that there are no plans to permanently delete the nuclear sign.

The old design includes a nuclear sign, under which a phrase from Prophet Mohammad is included, stating that Iranians will seek knowledge in far-away lands.

The new note includes the famous University of Tehran entrance structure which looks like an opened book, at the top of which a verse from Persian poet Abu ʾl-Qasim Ferdowsi emphasizes knowledge as a source of power.
