Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Aug. 25
By Demir Azizov- Trend:
Uzbekistan and Great Britain intend to sign a memorandum on cooperation in combating transnational crime, George Edgar, British ambassador completing his diplomatic mission in Tashkent, told reporters August 24.
Edgar said that the sides have recently reached significant progress in bilateral cooperation.
"This mainly concerns the political sphere," he said. "In particular, a number of visits were made at a governmental level. During the meetings, the sides discussed the further expansion of relations in various fields, including the fight against transnational crime. A memorandum on cooperation in the field including the fight against human, arms and drug trafficking is expected to be signed."
The ambassador stressed that Uzbekistan plays an important role in ensuring peace and stability in Central Asia and makes a big contribution to the socio-economic restoration of Afghanistan.
The diplomat also stressed the intensification of the trade-economic cooperation between the two countries.
"Several major British companies have appeared on the market of Uzbekistan in the last two to three years," Edgar said. "At present, some other companies express interest in establishing production in the country."
It was earlier reported that Edgar has led the British diplomatic mission in Uzbekistan since September 2012.
Christopher Allan was appointed as the new Ambassador of Great Britain to Uzbekistan.
Earlier, he served as a deputy head of the diplomatic mission of the kingdom in Ethiopia.
Allan is expected to assume his duties in Uzbekistan in autumn 2015.
