The Azerbaijani State Customs Committee offers to reduce the limit on duty-free import of goods through the international mail services, Aydin Aliyev, head of the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee, said at a press conference Jan. 29.

According to Azerbaijani laws, if goods worth no more than $1,000 are supplied to one physical entity through the international mail services or transport companies within 30 days, the customs duty is not imposed.

"This amount is high enough for the mail services," Aliyev said. "We have submitted the limit reduction proposals to the Cabinet of Ministers. Some 2,500 tons of goods were imported in Azerbaijan for the first nine months of 2015 via mail services. Only 2.4 tons of them were declared. This is a real detriment to the customs revenues transferred to the state budget."

Aliyev said that most of the imported goods account for mobile phones.

"Only one out of each ten mobile phones imported into the country was imported by phone suppliers in 2015. As a result, every year we face great damages."
