Tehran, Iran, May 1

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

The Iranian Ministry of Agriculture has voiced interest in having Russian companies in the joint production of aquatics.

Grounds are laid for Russians to engage in the joint farming of aquatics in Iranian free zones and the Islamic republic is fully prepared to further provide what is needed, said Hassan Salehi, Iran's deputy minister of agriculture, the government's website reported May 1.

The Russian companies can not only join for production, but for the export of the products as well, he said.

The move is in line with Iran's eye for a better footing in the Russian market after recent rifts between Moscow and a number of its traditional trade partners.

Last year Russia underwent some changes in political relations with Turkey, one of Russia's major food providers, over the Syrian conflict. As a result, Russia put a ban on Turkish imports.

Two years ago, also, Moscow and the EU found themselves in disagreement over Crimea, which again ended in a downgrading of bilateral trade ties.

Iran's last year fisheries export hit 84 thousand tons. The country says the number can easily be improved to 100 thousand.

Tehran says it is able to improve its fisheries export to Russia from the current 1,000 to 30,000 tons per year.
