Passenger transportation increases in Azerbaijan

About 749.2 million passengers were transported by Azerbaijan’s transportation sphere in January-May 2016, which is by 1.8 percent more than in the same period of 2015, says the report of the country’s State Statistical Committee.

Nearly 85.6 million tons of cargo was transported by the country’s transportation sphere during the reporting period, which is by three percent less than in January-May 2015.

The volume of transportation of non-oil cargo increased by 1.2 percent during the year and amounted to 62.4 million tons in the first five months of 2016.

About 81.8 percent of the total volume of cargo transported in January-May 2016 accounted for private sector. Some 61.8 percent of the total volume of cargo was transported by motor traffic, 28.9 percent – by pipelines, 6.7 percent – by railway and 2.5 percent – by maritime traffic, 0.1 percent – by air traffic.

About 749.2 million passengers were transported by passenger traffic in January-May 2016, which is by 1.8 percent more than in the same period of 2015. The main part of passengers (87.6 percent) was transported by motor traffic and 12.2 percent by subway.

Some 5.8 million tons of cargo was transported by railway traffic, which is by 23.5 percent less than in January-May 2015.

On average, the daily number of loaded railcars was 417, unloaded – 394.

Nearly 2.16 million tons of cargo was transported by maritime traffic in January-May 2016, which is by 31 percent less than in the same period of 2015. About 43.6 percent of the transported cargo accounted for oil cargos. The volume of cargos handled at the Azerbaijani ports was 3.67 million tons in January-May 2016.

About 52.9 million tons of cargo was transported by motor traffic during the reporting period, which exceeds the same period of 2015 by 2.8 percent.

Nearly 656.1 million people were transported by motor traffic during the reporting period (an increase by 2.5 percent as compared to January-May 2015); 96 percent of these passengers were transported by buses, 4 percent – by motor cars.

The volume of passenger transportation by subway was 91.7 million people during the reporting period, which is by 2.7 percent less than in January-May 2015.

Moreover, 627,000 passengers were transported by air traffic in January-May 2016, which is by 0.1 percent less than in the same period of 2015. Some 0.2 percent of air traffic accounted for private sector during the reporting period.
