India has requested from Azerbaijan to reduce customs duties for jewelry import, Indian media reported Dec. 28.

The issue was discussed by representatives of India’s Gem and Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) with the Indian Ambassador in Azerbaijan Sanjay Rana. The meeting was held at the GJEPC headquarters with the participation of GJEPC Chairman Praveen Shankar Pandya and Executive Director Sabyasachi Ray.

Reportedly, representatives of GJEPC have requested to discuss the reduction of customs duties with Azerbaijan’s Finance Ministry. Meanwhile, GJEPC representatives intend to invite Azerbaijani jewelers to the IIJS Signature exhibition, to be held in February 2017.

Ambassador Sanjay Rana, for his part, proposed to organize a mission of Indian jewelry exporters to Azerbaijan and hold an exhibition of Indian jewelries in Azerbaijan.

The best period for this is January-March or September-November, according to him.

Trade turnover between Azerbaijan and India totaled almost $451.13 million in January-November 2016, including $399 million – for the export of goods to India, according to Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee. According to the results of 11 months of 2016, India ranked 11th among Azerbaijan’s trade partners.
