Cargo transportation up in Azerbaijan

Some 49.6 million tons of cargo were transported by Azerbaijan’s modes of transport in January-March 2017, that is, by 2.9 percent more than in January-March 2016, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said in a report.

Non-oil cargo traffic increased by 5.5 percent for the year and amounted to 35.9 million tons.

The report said 77.3 percent of the total cargo transported in January-March 2017 accounted for private sector.

Some 58 percent of the total cargo was transported by motor vehicles, 29.9 percent – by pipelines, 8.1 percent – by trains, 3.9 percent – by ships and 0.1 percent was transported by planes.

Some 448.2 million passengers were transported in January-March 2017, which is 2.5 percent more than in the same period of 2016. Some 87.4 percent of passengers were transported by motor vehicles, 12.4 percent by subway and the remaining part – by other modes of transport.

Four million tons of cargo was transported by trains in January-March 2017, which is by 16.5 percent more than in January-March 2016, the report said.

On average, the daily number of loaded railcars was 369, while the number of unloaded railcars was 432.

Average daily load of carriages going in the northern direction of the railway amounted to 14,200 tons, in western direction – 5,200 tons and in the southern – 0,900 tons.

Some 1.92 million tons of cargo were transported by ships in January-March 2017, or by 52.3 percent more than in the same period of 2016. Some 45.6 percent of the transported cargo accounted for oil cargo.

Some 2.73 million tons of cargo were handled at the Azerbaijani ports in the first quarter of 2017.

According to the report, 28.8 million tons of cargo were transported by motor vehicles in January-March 2017, which is 2.3 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

Some 391.8 million people were transported by vehicles in January-March 2017 (an increase by 1.9 percent as compared to January-March 2016); 96.1 percent of these passengers were transported by buses and 3.9 percent - by vehicles.

Some 55.4 million people were transported by subway in January-March 2017, that is, by 6.1 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

Moreover, some 440,700 passengers were transported by planes in January-March 2017, or by 25.7 percent more than in the first quarter of 2016. Some 0.1 percent of air traffic accounted for private sector during the reporting period, the report said.
