Construction of a logistics center within the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway project has been implemented by 25 percent, a source in the Ministry of Transport, Maritime and Communications of Turkey told Trend, Aug. 30.

The source noted that, seven logistics centers, which will contribute to the development of Turkish economy, are currently being built in the country.

“When the construction of seven new logistics centers is completed, their total number will increase to 21, and this will turn Turkey into a global logistics center,” the source said.

The source noted that the logistics center, which is being built in Turkey’s Kars Province, will be commissioned on October 30, 2018.

Ahmet Arslan, minister of Transport, Maritime and Communications of Turkey, is expected to inspect the construction of the logistics center on Aug. 29, the source added.

The project’s estimated cost is 94.3 million Turkish liras (about $27.34 million as of Aug. 29).

Earlier, Turkey’s Ministry of Transport, Maritime and Communications told Trend that, a 300,000 square meters land plot was allotted for the construction of the logistics center.

Around 412,000 tons of cargo are expected to be transported through the logistics center annually.

An agreement on the creation of the logistics center was signed on July 19, during the visit of Head of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Javid Gurbanov to the Kars Province, when he had familiarized himself with the progress of the BTK project.

The BTK railway is being constructed on the basis of a Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement. Peak capacity of the railway is expected to be at 17 million tons of cargo per year.
