Azerbaijan strengthening cybersecurity of its banks

The Azerbaijani government is preparing a plan to strengthen cybersecurity of the country’s banks.

The Azerbaijani government is preparing a plan to strengthen cybersecurity of the country’s banks, a source in the banking sector told Trend.

According to the source, along with this, a plan of measures has been prepared on optimization of expenses of banks for IT-infrastructure, including the work with such systems as SWIFT [Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication].

Cybersecurity issues have recently become more relevant to financial companies. The source noted that the Azerbaijani banks also perfectly understand the need to strengthen cybersecurity.

“The world’s biggest financial organizations have paid special attention to this issue in recent years. For example, the SWIFT interbank system, which faced a number of cyber attacks last year, also took measures to strengthen its cybersecurity,” said the source.

SWIFT prepared new requirements on cybersecurity for banks and held their presentation in Baku in order to introduce them to local bankers, added the source.

SWIFT Regional Director for Russia, CIS and Mongolia Matvey Goering visited Baku for the presentation, noted the source adding that as part of his visit, Goering also met with newly appointed head of SWIFT user group for Azerbaijan and Deputy Chairman of Kapital Bank OJSC Nahid Zeynalov.
