Artificial islands will be created in Turkey in Marmara and the Black Sea, a source in the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey told Trend Oct. 17.

It is originally planned to create three artificial islands, according to the source.

“The islands in Marmara and the Black Sea will be created through excavation of soil, which will be removed during the construction of the Istanbul Canal, the source said.

About 2.7 billion cubic meters of land will be used to create artificial islands.

“The subsequent exploitation of the islands will be carried out on a commercial basis, construction of residential quarters is also planned here,” the source noted.

At the same time, the source didn’t specify the exact date of the project’s implementation and the cost of building the artificial islands.

Construction of Istanbul Canal, a waterway that will link the Black and Marmara seas, may begin in late 2017 after a winner of the tender for selecting contractors is defined, or in early 2018.
