The establishment of the Food Security Agency will improve control over the quality of products in Azerbaijan, Rajab Orujov, former minister of agriculture of Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Region, told Trend Nov. 14.
He said that food security is one of the most important issues for the country.
"This issue is connected with the health of the population,” he said. “Food poisoning is often observed due to the abundance of nitrates used in fertilizers. There are also a number of problems with packaging materials, especially when our products are exported abroad. So I think the decision on the establishment of the Food Security Agency is a timely and important step.”
Orujov added that the agency will control over food security.
"Today, the functions of ensuring food security are distributed among several state agencies,” he said. “The coordination of these issues by a single structure responsible for both imported and produced products will improve control over food security. For example, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock deals with food security in neighboring Turkey.”
He added that the formation of a food security system will take some time as this is a rather complicated task.
"Today the necessary legislative base has already been created and a new structure should carry out much work," Orujov said.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has signed a decree on ensuring the activity of the Food Security Agency.
The decree approves the "State of the Food Security Agency" and "Structure of the Food Security Agency". Under the decree, the limit of the staff of the Food Security Agency is set at 75 staff positions.
Furthermore, a public legal entity, the Azerbaijan Food Security Institute, is created under the Food Security Agency.
The decree determines that the Azerbaijan Food Security Institute conducts scientific and practical research in the field of food safety, carries out risk assessment on the basis of scientific principles, develops drafts of technical regulations in the field of food security and represents by designation, renders services in the study of safety indicators of foodstuffs.
