Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen International Airport will be connected to the city center by a high-speed railway, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey told Trend.

At present, the project is under development and it has already received an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), according to the ministry.

The total cost of the project is 4.853 billion Turkish liras ($1.256 billion as of Nov. 16), the ministry said.

Earlier, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey told Trend that Ankara's Esenboga Airport will be connected to the city center by a sub-surface metro line.

The project’s implementation is expected to start in two years and be wrapped up by 2023.

The first airport in Turkey was built in 1912 and was used for military purposes.
