A high-speed railway, which will connect the Turkish provinces of Gaziantep, Sanliurfa and Mardin, will be built in the south of the country, Turkey’s Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend Dec. 11.

The total length of the high-speed railway will be 320 kilometers, according to the ministry.

Construction of the railway’s section between the provinces of Gaziantep and Sanliurfa will start in January 2018, the ministry noted.

“It is expected that technical development on the project of the railway’s section between the provinces of Sanliurfa and Mardin will begin at the same time,” the ministry said.

Currently, the length of high-speed railway lines in Turkey is 1,213 kilometers and construction of another 4,000 kilometers of railway lines continues.

Also, research is being conducted for the construction of additional 5,000 kilometers of railway lines.

It is expected that the length of high-speed railway lines will be brought up to 10,000 kilometers in the country until 2023.

Turkey’s first railway was built in Izmir province in 1860. Its length was 357 kilometers.
