By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Free trade zones in Turkey will be linked to the country’s railway communication system, Turkey’s Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend Dec. 12.

“Laying railway lines in free trade zones will help reduce the cost of cargo transportation there,” the ministry said.

First of all, railway lines will be laid in the free trade zone created in 2000 in the province of Denizli.

“The work to lay railway lines in the direction of the free trade zone in Denizli will start in early 2018 and will finish at the end of the same year,” the ministry said.

Currently, there are 19 free trade zones in Turkey. The first free trade zone was opened in Turkey’s resort province of Mersin in 1985.

In 2000, Turkey opened three more free trade zones in Bursa, Denizli and Kocaeli provinces.

A free trade zone may also be created in Ankara.
