By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Six bridges are planned to be built over the shipping channel in Istanbul, a source in the Turkish government told Trend Jan. 25.

The source said that the preliminary cost of six bridges’ construction is about 5 billion Turkish liras.

“There is no exact information yet about on which sections of the channel the bridges will be built,” said the source adding that transport on these bridges will be free.

It is expected that two of the six planned bridges will be suspension bridges, added the source.

According to preliminary estimates, the cost of the shipping channel construction project is 60 billion Turkish liras, and the project has already received a certificate of environmental safety. The ministry said that 6,000 people will be engaged in the channel’s construction.

For the first time in 2011, the current president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, announced his intention to implement the Istanbul channel construction project.

The project’s purpose is to reduce the load from shipping to the Bosphorus Strait, as well as to prevent the threat of ecological and man-made disasters on one of the world’s most intense sea lanes.
