Baku, Azerbaijan, April 24

By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

In order to further develop cooperation with Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan proposes to establish a joint intergovernmental commission on water issues, State Agency of Turkmenistan Dovlet Habarlary reported.

"It is also timely to consider the possibility of elaborating a bilateral agreement on the rational use of Amudarya river waters," the information says.

As far back as 1996, the two countries signed a Treaty under which water resources flowing through the territories of the two states are divided on the principle of fifty-fifty.

It should be noted that President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov is on a state visit to Uzbekistan.

Turkmenistan borders Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Afghanistan and uses water resources taken from four transboundary rivers i.e. Amu Darya, Tejen, Murgab and Atrek rivers, in accordance with agreed quotas.
