Tajikistan reveals date for commissioning cargo terminal of Dushanbe International Airport

The cargo terminal of the Dushanbe International Airport is going to be commissioned on June 26, Deputy General Director of the International Airport of Dushanbe OJSC Asliddin Melikov stated on May 4.

The statement was made during the ratification of the grant agreement between the Government of Tajikistan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on the “Improvement of the Dushanbe International Airport (Phase 2)” project by the lower house of the country's parliament.

According to the statement, the second stage of construction of the cargo terminal is currently underway, and technical work is ongoing to improve the adjacent territory.

The Japanese government provided $3.9-million grant on the construction of the cargo terminal in line with the document signed in 2017

The deputy head of the Dushanbe airport noted that construction of the cargo terminal began in February 2017. He emphasized that the construction work is being carried out in two stages.

“At the first stage, direct construction work was carried out. At the second stage, which is currently ongoing, technical work is being carried out to improve the adjacent territory. The facility is planned to be commissioned on June 26,” Melikov said.

According to him, total of $20.8 million are being spent on construction of the cargo terminal.

“Up until now, roughly $15 million has been spent from the allocated funds,” Melikov said.

In June 2014, the Government of Tajikistan and the JICA signed a grant agreement on “Improvement of the Dushanbe International Airport”. According to the agreement, the Government of Japan granted 1.91 billion yens ($17.5 million) on construction of a cargo terminal, purchase and installation of ILS and PALS navigation systems, and purchase of cargo handling equipment.

Following the results of the international tender, Added Value Corporation was selected as the main supplier of ILS and PALS systems, which ensure precise landing of aircraft. The systems and the cargo handling equipment were purchased in Norway, Germany, Belgium and Japan.

In February 2017, specialists of the Added Value Corporation started working on the project.
